Sign #4: Visible joist tops. If you can see the tops of your ceiling joists rising above the insulation, the depth is too low. Re-seat shifted batts and note any that are wet or moldy for replacement.
Compression from stored items. If the previous homeowner used the attic for storage and laid plywood or boxes on top of the batts, the insulation underneath is crushed. Compressed fiberglass batt loses R-value directly proportional to how flat it is. A 6-inch R-19 batt squashed down to 2 inches performs like R-6. Batts that look soggy or darker than their original color. Fiberglass batt should be uniformly pink or yellow. - Wait for a day when the attic temperature is tolerable, ideally before 10 a.m. in the fall or spring months in Sunnyvale.

- Push the tape measure straight down through the insulation until the metal tip touches the top of the ceiling drywall below.
